About Barataria Gent
Have you ever stepped into a fresh new pair of socks and felt like a whole new person? Each and every time you wear Barataria Gent’s, you won’t just feel revitalized; you'll be whisked away to the “islands in de sun”, the “islands in de fun”, the magical world that is Trinidad! Its intoxicatingly playful spirit swirls around your toes, winds up your legs, and plants itself deep within your heart, bringing to your face the kind of contagious smile that only this tropical locale can achieve.
My name is Stephen, Founder of Barataria Gent and great-grandson of the dapper, Trinidadian legend Joseph Jacob. I’ve long dreamed of a way to inject my heritage and culture into the diversified lifestyles of people around the world. One day, I was struck by an idea for this that I could not ignore: socks! I knew that if people slipped their feet into a soft, comfy foot hug that has been infused with the enchantment of Trinidad, their lives would never be the same again. So, I launched Barataria Gent to do just that!
Each pair of our socks carries a soulful story from my life, heritage, identity, and travels. My inspiring, late great-grandfather serves as the cornerstone of this brand, the very link that connects us with the heart of this island nation. Born in 1895, this distinguished man of wisdom served as a notable Headmaster, loyal husband (of more than fifty years), and proud father to ten handsome sons and five beautiful daughters. At the core of his identity were his beloved Barataria and its wealth of unparalleled cuisine, festive music, lush beaches, animated culture, and lively traditions. He was truly Trini to de bone, which is why I have honored his legacy by making him the face of our company, as you will see in our logo.
“The true secret for a long and happy marriage really lies in the ability to give a little and take a little,” Joseph Jacob once told a local newspaper, bestowing upon us such a simple method for success in love that could be applied to nearly any and every kind of relationship that exists, whether it is amorous, platonic, familial, or even professional.
Barataria is a cheerful, friendly city near the Port of Spain in the East-West Corridor. It’s a hearty destination, where residents and visitors alike live their best lives. It is believed to have been named for a twelve-plate sugar mill that formerly operated in the community in the early twentieth century. East Indians working the sugar cane plantation gave it this title, with “Bara” meaning twelve and “taria” translating to “plate”.
With every stride taken in a pair of Barataria Gent’s socks, you’ll be walking in rhythm with the beats of our iconic Soca, Calypso, and Chutney jams. Let the Sweet T&T vibes elevate your day as you walk in the footsteps of my ancestors and the generations of people who’ve made Trinidad and Tobago what it is today. Enjoy out-of-this-world comfort, first-rate quality, and sophisticated style that will have you dancin’ in the streets as if it is our epic Carnival. After all, God is ah Trini!
Due to my great-grandfather’s lengthy and passion-driven career as a Barataria school Headmaster, a portion of the proceeds from every sock sold will be donated to support Trinidadian education, as well as the local youth that have been impacted by trauma.
